Your observations are important. What do you notice about odors, stains, residue, and taste problems?
When and where do you notice these problems? Be sure to look in the fill tank of a toilet, where the float is located, and observe for accumulations of floating, settled or slimy substances. This is an indicator of contamination of your plumbing system, because if the material is there, it got there through the plumbing.
Knowledge is power. What is your water source? It is either a public utility or a private source such as a well, a spring, or a body of water.
If you own a private system, take photos, locate manuals, receipts and any other pertinent information, and bring it to us.
Get your water tested. Start by bringing a sample of your source water in any clean container to our store. Bring at least 8 ounces.
We will test for mineral hardness, iron, pH, Total Dissolved Solids, (TDS) and tannic acid as needed. Any other analyses should be performed by a qualified laboratory.
Have your well and your current system if any, inspected.
Do you need a new treatment system, or is having your existing system serviced and updated more appropriate? This is not a purchase decision one makes often. Empower yourself with transparency and verifiable facts. Plan for the long term. A well designed treatment system can last 20 years, with proper maintenance and operation. It will require diligent attention on a regular basis,. Plan for possible changes in source water quality, weather factors and changes in your household demands.
Your home's plumbing system may be contaminated to the point it may adversely affect your water quality. If the pipes in your home contain accumulated mineral deposits, iron bacteria or sulfur bacteria, you may experience less than normal flow and pressure, and odors may be noticeable, despite the fact you had a new treatment system installed. The most obvious sign of trouble is accumulated bacterial slime in the fill tank of your toilet. If the bacteria made it that far, the entire plumbing system in your home is contaminated. You may need to have your home re-piped by a plumbing contractor.
