Most of the water treatment happens here. There are no shortcuts.
This tank is plumbed downstream of the well or source water and upstream of the carbon filter. Chlorine is injected at the inlet where it mixes with the water prior to entering the tank. The chlorine reacts with the water. The water exits the tank through the top. From there the water goes the carbon filter for dechlorination and particle removal.
Chlorine does three things:
1-it kills bacteria. Chlorine takes 15 minutes to kill bacteria. This tank is sized at 120 gallons. At 8 gallons per minute flow rate, you will get 15 minutes of retention time.
2-it oxidizes iron. The iron will turn to rust and settle to the bottom of the tank.
3-it oxidizes sulfur. The hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas in the water is the source of the rotten egg odor in the water. The oxidized sulfur becomes a solid and it settles to the bottom of the tank.
There is a drain at the bottom of the tank. Open it periodically to flush the settled solids out. Solids do not settle perfectly. Often they will stick to the side of the tank. The most effective way to flush them out is to empty the tank. Allow air to enter the tank from the spigot near the top as you drain it. Open the inlet and allow water to flow in while the drain is still open. This will allow the tank to be cleaned more thoroughly. Run the water until it appears clear. Allow air to escape out the spigot near the top when refilling the tank.
